History, Atmosphere and Flavor: Our Favorite Restaurants in the North End
Dating back to the late 1800’s Boston has been home to a large community of Italian immigrants and their descendants. The initial influx settled in the city’s storied neighborhood known as the North End. Over the past century, Italian culture and influence has filled the neighborhood’s narrow streets and red brick buildings with love and some of the most delicious flavors available in all of New England. We’ve decided to celebrate one of the best collections of Italian restaurants outside of Italy itself and share a few of our favorite restaurants in the North End.
A staple of North End dining, L’Osteria combines a warm and inviting atmosphere with a menu that represents classic and innovative dishes. The dining room has quaint and tasteful decorations. Two of the main walls are filled with windows bringing in light and openness rare amongst most small North End restaurants.
Any dish ordered at L’Osteria is guaranteed to leave eaters satisfied and full. Rich flavors are wonderfully present in their ace in the hole dish— veal marsala. L’Osteria also pushes the envelope with creative entrees such as the shrimp parmigiana. Beyond these examples, there is a wealth of wonderful flavors to be explored at this great North End restaurant.
This delicious restaurant opened in 1998 as an offshoot of successful and revered parent restaurants— also under the Monica moniker. With over a decade and a half under its belt, it’s now safe to say that Trattoria di Monica is making the family proud. A classic North End redbrick interior with a candlelight dining room provides the perfect energy for delicious food.
Their menu is expansive and filled with rich, flavorful choices. One of the favorites is the braciolettini di vitello, which is roasted veal stuffed with cheese wrapped in prosciutto, basil and garlic with mushroom, eggplant and plum tomato sauce over green fettuccini. This intimate restaurant is the way to try North End Italian food.
On any given night, the North End’s favorite bakery will have a line around the corner filled with excited eaters. Luckily, they turn their delicious desserts quickly, so the wait isn’t too long, but considering the quality of their treats, it’s worth waiting an eternity for. Mike’s Pastry has some of the best biscotti, canolis, marzipan and gelati available in the United States. The perfect way to cap off a night, or spoil oneself in the middle of the day, this is the spot to cap off a delicious North End experience.
